In January of 2024 our role will expand to provide daily care for those animals found as strays and are held at the City Pound facility. We are currently seeking applications for staff to help assist us in returning found strays and rehoming those that are left unclaimed at the City Pound. The Role

We are currently looking for a full-time, permanent Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) to join our team of animal care professionals. If a full-time applicant is not found, we would consider multiple part-time applicants.

Our RVTs work to provide medical care to stray animals found and impounded under our municipal bylaws. Our RVT will also work with animals who have passed the impoundment holding period and are currently adoptable or heading to foster care.

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • The technical skills needed to work independently and efficiently
  • An ability to recognize the unique environment and challenges that the shelter provides.
  • Excellent communication skills and an ability to both lead and follow; with an ability to assess the situation and determine which is beneficial based on circumstance.
  • Registration as a Vet Tech in Saskatchewan and references confirming good standing
  • A means of commuting to our location
  • A clean criminal record check
  • Clinical experience is preferred.
  • Emergency experience is an asset.
  • Shelter experience is an asset.

Duties and Responsibilities

Working alongside our Vet and Animal Care team, the successful candidate will be responsible for:
  • Evaluation of new animals at the time of intake. Generating vet referrals for these animals as needed and any related communication specific to care. Vaccination of these incoming animals.
  • Communication with adoptive families and foster homes over the phone, email, and in person regarding past medical history and medical plan moving forward (if required).
  • Ongoing physical examinations and assessments, beyond those completed at intake.
  • Completion of animal treatments using directive from our veterinarian.
  • Maintenance of records specific to animal care and treatment and administration of medications.
  • Performance of in-house diagnostics.
  • Euthanasia of animals under the directive of our veterinarian and in conjunction with the Animal Protection Act.
  • Coordination of surgical appointments and related preparation.
  • Facilitation, instruction and communication with our animal care team regarding the animals within the shelter and general care.
  • Other duties as required.

Note: an optional on call opportunity exists for the right candidate (with opportunity for additional wages)

Schedule:

The animals in our care require attention seven days a week. The permanent FT RVT position will be offered preferential weekday hours. The permanent PT positions will provide coverage of weekend shifts. Given that our animal intakes continue over statutory holidays either position may require stat. holiday work.

The Role

Our Bylaw enforcement Officers work within the community, addressing community concerns (present and past), processing bylaw infractions and mediating community concerns.

Our City Pound Clerks work within our reception area at the City Animal Pound facility. This job encompasses multiple responsibilities including; reception, adoption counselling, bylaw enforcement, general Admin work and education of the public.

This position will be a hybrid position, encompassing both roles.

Duties and Responsibilities

As a Bylaw enforcement Officer, your responsibilities are covered under The City of Saskatoon Bylaws 7860 -The Animal Control Bylaw and 8176 - The Dangerous Animal Bylaw. As part of the enforcement of these two laws you will be responsible for a multitude of tasks including:
  • Call receipt, screening and dispatching of incoming calls.
  • Responding to bylaw specific concerns and complaints.
  • Documenting case file related interactions.
  • Court attendance as applicable.
  • Issuing Notices of Violation (citations/tickets).
  • Maintenance of animal records and documentation relative to public interactions.
  • Animal handling, capture and transfer of animals, both to their respective homes as well as the City Pound.
  • Investigation and identification of bylaw infractions.
  • Park patrol and bike patrol.
  • Education of the population specific to Animal Control and bylaw specific concerns.
  • Other duties as required.

Our clerks work returning impounded animals under the same bylaws, but also engage in our adoption, foster and volunteer programs.

Qualifications

What You’ll Bring:
  • Strong communication skills.
  • A general knowledge of animal behavior and identification.
  • Basic knowledge of computers and data entry.
  • A combination of experience demonstrating an ability to handle a fast paced environment, problem solving skills, animal handling or communication skills.
  • Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent.
  • An ability to work independently, as a self-starter.
  • Proof of a valid driver’s license.
  • Provision of a clean criminal record check.

Compensation

$19.00 - $24.00 per hour plus potential for on-call wages
